Lanlocked and Lonesome - Burnt Island - Maine

Landlocked and Lonesome

This shot was taken while visiting Burnt Island Maine, which can be reached by taking just a short boat ride out of Boothbay Harbor. There is a great educational program run on the island which involves a troupe of interpreters playing the part of the lighthouse keeper and his family, circa the 1950’s. As soon as we got off the boat, we gathered in a wooded area next to the dock to talk about the tour of the island. Of course, I immediately saw this scene and and was in my own little world, blown away by the view. Seeing this made me want to grab the boat and walk down the path…
Unfortunately, the following year we visited and the boat was gone and area wasn’t as overgrown.

Burnt Island is a beautiful five-acre island owned by the Maine Department of Marine Resources. It is near the mainland and approximately one mile from the port of Boothbay Harbor. The historic buildings at this lighthouse station have been carefully restored and transformed into an exceptionally fine educational facility. The island itself is also a great place to hike as it has wooded areas that give way to coastline as it is a fairly small island.
